9 Days To Make A Single Natural Material Handcrafted Elegant Shawl Or Stole – Stage 3

9 Days To Make A Single Natural Material Handcrafted Elegant Shawl Or Stole – Stage 3

STAGE 3 – Dye the Yarn

The third stage of the process is to dye the yarn. This stage can be chemically dyed. However, VE-WE-GE Empowering Rural India prefers to obtain products that are dyed naturally as this is kinder to both the skin and the planet. Also chemical dyed products look, well, not natural.

Natural dyeing is done with vegetation, plantations and flowers. We recommend washing it in cold temperature or dry cleaning it. Boiling it in boiling water with a natural dyeing source. The yarn is stretched out at the crack of dawn and left to dry for the whole day in sunlight. This natural drying will strengthen the yarn.

STAGE 4 – Wound Onto a Large Spindle

The dyed yarn is then wound onto a large spindle. The reason behind the shape and size of spindle is so the yarn remains stretched.

STAGE 5 – Yarn is Ready for Wrapping

The yarn is now ready for warping.  Traditionally, in the villages of Gujarat, warping is done with a large L shaped non mechanical equipment called Tana Kadhvanu. Here the strings are separated and wound onto large bobbins. VE-WE-GE Empowering Rural India had the fortunate opportunity to film this in action. From video below, I’m sure you will appreciate the length of time taken to get this right.
